Objectives

The purpose of this module is to develop a common framework for analyzing social media applications, explore some popular social media web sites and examine how they might be employed for national preparedness, response and recovery.
 
Definition:     Social network analysis [SNA]: the mapping and measuring of relationships and flows between people, groups, organizations, computers, URLs, and other connected information/knowledge entities.

Social media applications share some common characteristics. In order to facilitate the analysis of the selected social media applications, we have developed a framework for analysis. The framework attributess are neither mutually exclusive or collectively exhaustive. It is a work in progress.
 
Framework for Social Media Application Analysis
IdentificationThe name and URL of the social media application.
ApplicationThe purpose and scope of the application.
Personal identityHow are individuals identified and how do they interact?
Evolved organizationHow does organization evolve from the individuals?
LurkingAre nonmembers permitted to observe/participate at some level?
PersistenceWhat information is maintained from session to session? Profiles, links, content, history?
MembershipWhat are the prerequisites for membership/participation
Roles What roles can members play? Buyer, seller, author, reader, editor, reviewer, etc. Are there classes of roles? Expert, novice, etc.
FundingHow is the site paid for? Fees, Advertising, Donations, Data Mining
InteractionHow do members interact?
SanctionsHow are members punished for misusing the social netwwork application?
 
Exercise:     Identify more social network attributes and their definitions that might be added to the framework.
