Objectives
The purpose of this module is to develop a common framework for analyzing social media applications, explore some popular social media web sites and examine how they might be employed for national preparedness, response and recovery. |

Social network analysis [SNA]: the mapping and measuring of relationships and flows between people, groups, organizations, computers, URLs, and other connected information/knowledge entities.

| Social media applications share some common characteristics. In order to facilitate the analysis of the selected social media applications, we have developed a framework for analysis. The framework attributess are neither mutually exclusive or collectively exhaustive. It is a work in progress. |

| Framework for Social Media Application Analysis |
| Identification | The name and URL of the social media application. |
| Application | The purpose and scope of the application. |
| Personal identity | How are individuals identified and how do they interact? |
| Evolved organization | How does organization evolve from the individuals? |
| Lurking | Are nonmembers permitted to observe/participate at some level? |
| Persistence | What information is maintained from session to session? Profiles, links, content, history? |
| Membership | What are the prerequisites for membership/participation |
| Roles | What roles can members play? Buyer, seller, author, reader, editor, reviewer, etc. Are there classes of roles? Expert, novice, etc. |
| Funding | How is the site paid for? Fees, Advertising, Donations, Data Mining |
| Interaction | How do members interact? |
| Sanctions | How are members punished for misusing the social netwwork application? |
