Job Hunting | |
This file contains some ideas and suggestions for job hunting in energency management and homeland security. You should begin your job situation assessment as soon as possible. The suggestions in this file and the web resources apply equally well to internships.
First you should think about whether your ideal job is at the state, federal, or local level, or in a corporate environment.
Next, get an idea of what type of job you would like to get. What jobs are available? What are the requirements for different jobs?
Below are web sites for jobs at different levels. Most jurisdictions list all jobs in a single web site to provide equal access to all potential applicants.
Federal Jobs - www.usajobs.gov
FEMA - www.fema.gov | |
FEMS Training - www.fema.gov/emergency-managers/national-preparedness/training
PA Jobs - www.pa.gov/guides/commonwealth-careers
Allegheny County Jobs - www.alleghenycounty.us/careers/index.aspx
Pittsburgh Jobs - https://pittsburghpa.gov/humanresources
I have included web sites for PA. You can do the same for other states if you are interested in relocating.
Scan the jobs and formulate a list of jobs that you are interested in. Note that independent agencies (Energy, Agriculture, Education, etc.) might have EM or HS jobs even in addition to FEMA, DHS, and primary agencies. Look at the FEMA training site and identify the kinds of skills needed.
Professional Societies such as the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) also post good career information - www.iaem.org
All Federal, State and Local agencies accomplish much of their work through subcontractors.
There are literally thousands of subcontractors. Many of these jobs are EM/HS jobs.
See the following: www.sba.gov/document/support-directory-federal-government-prime-contractors-subcontracting-plans
Do not forget about US Corporations. All large corporations have security, emergency response and other related departments. Plenty of jobs here.

Internships | |
Many of the organizations that are hiring also have internship opportunities. Internships are an excellent way for you to get practical experience to augment your certificate.
The Pitt Police Department has a top quality internship program. See www.police.pitt.edu. Descriptions of the program and the typical internships can be found at: PittPoliceInternshipProgram and PittPoliceInternshipProgramDescription
